“I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.”—Audrey Hepburn
“It makes a big difference to recycle. It makes a big difference to use recycled products. It makes a big difference to reuse things, to not use the paper cup & each time you do, that’s a victory.”—Emily Deschanel
On days that Tris & I have been able to eat together we have both done well.
Unfortunately when Tris is left to make his own food choices he has not been so successful e.g. thinking a wetherspoons burger was ok as he did not have fries. In an effort to avoid further instances of this I have written him some guidelines on how to choose his food & how much of it to eat.
My favourite of these rules is:
If Geri is not around to consult on food ask female flatmate. If she is not there ask Karl. If Karl is unavailable call your Mum. If your Mum does not answer then ask Sammy (the cat). If Sammy doesn’t answer then use your best judgement on what is a suitable diet sized portion & then halve it!
Well it is now one week since Tris & I properly began our diet. So far I have lost 2.3kg which makes me rather happy.
There have of course been ups & downs to this week. I’ve had a lot of fun creating low fat but tasty recipes for our meals but we realised that we had been eating around double the portion size we should have been. This has meant that we are suffering hunger pains pretty much all the time as we wait for our stomachs to realise that this is the amount of food to expect from now on.
On Saturday we decided to have some of the more naughty foods that we like but try to keep within our calorie limits to minimise the risk of gaining back the weight we had lost over the week. Eating tiny portions of these was tasty but it showed us that we were better off having two super healthy meals that we could have a bit more of during the day & then the naughtier lunch or dinner so we don’t repeat the experience of going to bed feeling incredibly hungry. Sunday we put this into practice & found our appetites were much better sated than the previous day.
Onto step two soon. Adding proper exercise into our routine!
A Butterbeer break. This was obviously cream soda with caramel colouring topped with whipped cream. Tris & I theorised that this drink was originally designed for the Harry Potter World in Orlando as it was an ice cold beverage. I don’t think it’s worth buying & a number of other visitors must have agreed as there were a lot of abandoned nearly full cups strewn over the tables!
As we were not keen we are working on a recipe for how we envisage Butterbeer should taste from the descriptions in the books & our own imaginations as we’re planning an HP movie marathon themed party soon. I shall post it once it is perfected.

So over the past couple of decades like a lot of people out there I have been dieting on & off. Sometimes successfully & sometimes not.
In the past I have been dieting because other people have pressured me to but this time I am doing it because I want to. I want to be healthier rather than thinner (although that will be a pleasant side effect) & it is fortunate that Tris also wants to do the same.
One of the issues I have found in the past is that constantly denying myself things I would like to eat leads me to eventually rebel & binge. Rather than find myself in this position again I have decided to watch my food intake very carefully the majority of the week & allow myself to eat a moderate portion of the foods I avoid the rest of the week for one breakfast, one lunch & two dinners (usually over the weekend).
There will be a mixture of diet friendly & more indulgent recipes popping up from now on as I try new things. Please let me know how you get on if you give them a try.
